The Open University
The Open University (TOU) is a 50-year-old public distance learning and research university, a feat which has helped it become one of the biggest higher education institutions in the world. Since its establishment, TOU has helped teach over 2 million students, and currently touts a cohort of over 170,000. TOU also has a 48-hectare campus, in which postgraduate students can reside and make use of its research facilities. Furthermore, though TOU is based in Milton Keynes, its courses can be studied from all around the world. Courses cover a broad range of range of disciplines, and stem across TOU’s 5 academic faculties: Arts and Social Sciences; Wellbeing, Education, and Language Studies; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; The Open University Business School, and The Open University Law School. Crucially, all students have named tutors who can be met in person, alongside other students, to ensure they are supported during their time at TOU. In terms of services and facilities available to TOU’s students, the main source of study resources come from an online library, which provides access to an array of e-books and journals, in addition to various databases for research articles. In addition, a physical library in the form of Walton Hall is also available for students to engage and interact with. Notably, librarians are on-hand 24/7 to ensure students get the support they need, and regular training and events are organised for students to get involved with. In addition, TOU has a dedicated Students’ Union as well as a dedicated Careers team, which is disseminated across a LinkedIn group and a jobs and employability bulletin. Students can also request a careers consultation, should they be inclined to do so. Overall, with a range of online courses, extensive online resources, 24/7 support, a dedicated Union and Careers team, and with over 80% of its graduates finding work or moving onto further study within six months of graduating, The Open University is an opportune destination for anyone looking to pursue further study from the comfort of their home. The very nature of distance learning opens new doors for students, and ensure they find time to learn during the busy nature of the modern day.
