In the article below, we will provide you with a step-by-step overview of the best tips to successfully apply to and pass the Shell recruitment process and their assessment tests. If you are a professional changing job, or a student looking for an internship or graduate scheme at Shell, this text is for you. It will help you understand what you need to do to successfully prepare for Shell’s job application and assessment process.

Royal Dutch Shell (Shell) is a British-Dutch multinational oil and gas company. Each year Shell receives over thousands of job applications in the UK alone for just a few job openings.

To select the best candidates, Shell need to screen thousands of applications; their recruitment process is divided into four stages of assessment.

Competition for their jobs is extremely fierce, and you need to make sure to perform your best at each and every stage of the recruitment process; starting with your online application, through to your online assessments, video interview and the final assessment.

Tip: Throughout the application process, remember to show that you possess the skills and characteristics that would make you an ideal candidate. Based on what Shell look for in their candidates, you will be assessed on your:

  • capacity for analysis,
  • decision-making
  • ability to create workable solutions
  • drive,
  • enthusiasm,
  • resilience and
  • confidence

These are the four steps of the Shell job application process:

  1. Shell online application
  2. Shell online aptitude tests
  3. Shell video interview
  4. Shell assessment center

STEP 1

Shell Online application

Once you have done the necessary research for Shell, and have decided on the programme you wish to apply for:

  1. You will need to complete the online form, which includes
  • your A-Level results,
  • your academic background,
  • relevant work experience and
  • motivational questions on your reasons to join Shell

Alternatively, you can also use your LinkedIn profile to save time.

  1. You need to make sure you have provided accurate information before your submission, and you should never leave this until the last minute.
  2. Tip: apply as early as possible, as this increases your chances of being reviewed on a rolling basis. Check your email frequently in case Shell’s HR department should require any clarification or further details.

STEP 2

Shell assessment
aptitude test online

Depending on your line of business, you might be required to take two Shell assessment tests, which are supplied by Cubiks, a well-known company.

These might include Shell’s:

The difficulty level of the assessments will depend on the business area and position you applied to, so be sure to carefully read all the information in the email from Shell asking you to complete the aptitude tests.

Shell cognitive test

This online aptitude test is made up of three sections: numerical reasoning, logical reasoning and verbal reasoning. You will have 4 minutes to complete each section. Once candidates have received a link to the test portal, they are only allotted 10 days to complete all of the assessments.

Tip: you should keep practicing aptitude tests beforehand since you never know when you will be invited to take the test. Without practicing, there is little chance of passing with a score beyond the required threshold. Competition is very fierce at this stage, and the vast majority of candidates do not make it to the next stage.

Shell Numerical reasoning test

  • If it has been a while since you did Maths – do not worry! All you have to do is a quick recap of basic GCSE calculations, such as ratios, percentages and reading data off charts. What makes Shell’s

numerical reasoning test difficult is not the knowledge tested, but how you cope with the information presented under the time pressure.

  • Tip: You need to learn to manage your stress and work quickly, but correctly through the questions – and the best way to achieve this is by practicing tests in a safe environment before your actual test.

Shell verbal reasoning test

  • The verbal reasoning test identifies a candidate’s ability to understand and then respond critically to the information in a passage of test, by indicating whether they perceive the provided statements to be true, false or whether they cannot say, given the information in the passage.
  • Shell’s verbal reasoning test could be more difficult for people who are not native English speakers, but all is not lost! By practicing verbal reasoning test questions as much as you can, you can understand how the tests are built, and how the questions are asked.

  • Remember, you will have no more than 45 seconds to answer questions like the following

Shell logical reasoning test

  • Shell’s logical reasoning test does not test any particular area, but rather presents candidates with 5 diagrams with changing shapes and spatial arrangements, and requires them to identify the right pattern and determine what would come next in the sequence.
  • The main difficulty of this particular logical reasoning test is that there is no limit to how abstract these patterns and trends can be; in terms of the: size, arrangement, movements and colours of two- and three-dimensional shapes
  • Sound complex? In fact, it is actually not that difficult. What you need to do is to have a look at sample questions to get comfortable with what these questions are after, and the only way to achieve this is by practicing specific Shell-style logical reasoning tests, such as the ones offered by Graduates First (see sample question below). Remember: you will never get the same questions as those in the practice tests, but you will gain experience in recognising test patterns and managing your stress and time pressure.

In the example above, you will have ONLY around 45 seconds to notice that:

  • the arrow moves around the diagram
  • shapes change from triangle to circle to square and
  • the long line is either horizontal or vertical
  • and then to find the right answer! There is a lot of time pressure which often leaves candidates feeling anxious, which subsequently harms their performance.

  • Tip: Bear in mind the type of skills and responsibilities that match the position you have applied to, when taking the Shell Working Style Assessment. • In this test, you will be expected to make decisions as to which answers would produce the best and worst outcomes, based on their feasibility and efficiency. Some questions might also focus on teamwork values and leadership.

STEP 3

Shell video interview

After you successfully pass the online tests, you will be required to take a short, self-recorded video interview to tell Shell more about yourself and your background. This is an opportunity for you to show your interest and demonstrate the potential skills that make you suitable for the particular role that you applied to.

Before your interview, you are advised to think of some ideas that you could then use during your interview. It is a good idea to base these on the most common types of interview questions.

Tip: If you are expecting a video interview, make sure you find a quiet space where you will not be disturbed, and make sure that you are settled at least 10 minutes prior to the interview start. Remind yourself why you would like to work for Shell, and what your key achievements are – both in personal and professional life. You need to convince the interviewer that you are the best candidate for the job and the company, and need to prove that you will stay equally determined and enthusiastic throughout your time with the company.

This interview will last about 20-25 minutes and will expose you to a few pre-recorded competency-based questions

Want to know what questions could come up in your interview? Graduates First has developed a proprietary tool that helps to identify the questions that are likely to come up in your interview: the Question Identifier Tool (QIT). You can purchase it by following this link.

STEP 4

Shell Final Assessment

In this last stage of the recruitment process, you will be asked to participate in a live online session with two professionals from Shell. You will have to discuss a case study which will be available to you 48 hours before the session.

Tip: Take time to carefully read through the materials, and make some notes on key points. Use this chance to do some background reading on the topic. Do some research online to find out how the case study should be presented.

In your assessment, you will be given 20 minutes (30 if you are a non-native English speaker) to prepare a 5-minute presentation, which will be followed by 30 minutes of questioning from assessors.

For examples of case study questions that you may experience, look at in-tray exercises prepared by experienced occupational psychologists at Graduates First. The best way to prepare for this type of assessment is to practice your skills on sample case studies; once you learn how to critically analyse a piece of information and present your findings, you will be able to cope with any topic!

You may also look at other materials to prepare for your assessment centre.

Graduates First provide a comprehensive explanation of e-tray and in-tray exercises, presentation exercises, role-play, group discussion and written exercises. We also offer the assessment preparation toolkit which contains all the above.

Our research shows that vast majority of the candidates do not prepare sufficiently for aptitude tests, and therefore have almost no chance of succeeding. The online psychometric tests are used by employers like Shell to sift through large quantities of candidates, and select only the best prepared for the next stage of the job assessment process. Since more and more candidates prepare, your competition is only growing stronger.
