RBS’ logical reasoning test does not examine any particular area of knowledge, but rather presents a candidate with 5 diagrams with varying shapes and spatial arrangements, and then asks them to identify the right pattern and decide what comes next in the sequence.

  4. Are you a detailed person or a big picture person?

  • Although the Strength Based Interview assesses your natural behaviours, try to frame your answers to match an ideal candidate for the job role. What are the examples of IBM Cognitive Ability Assessment?

Game 1: IBM Cognitive Ability Assessment – “Shortcuts”

The first of the series of IBM Cognitive Ability Assessment games is called ‘Shortcuts’.

In this gamified assessments your goal is to move the blue marble to the area with stars, while minimizing the distance the blue marble travels. In other words, you need to use as few moves as possible. The difficulty level will increase as you advance through the game.

“Shortcuts” game will measure your reasoning and planning abilities. You will need to use abstract thinking to find different paths blue marble can travel, and then optimize the routes to choose the best possible option.

Game 2: IBM Cognitive Ability Assessment – “Gridlock”

The second of IBM Cognitive Ability Assessments is called a ‘Gridlock’. Gridlock is an IBM gamified assessment which will require candidates to solve a number of puzzles by fitting all pieces into the grid as quickly as possible.

You will have 3 minutes to solve as many puzzles as they can. The difficulty level will increase as the game progresses.

To fill the area with blocks given you can click on the blocks outside the main area to rotate them to the angle you require to solve the puzzle. To do well in this assessment you will need to use your spatial reasoning skills, which you can practice by playing the well known game, Tetris.

Game 3: IBM Cognitive Ability Assessment – “Resemble”

The third in the series of IBM Cognitive Ability Assessments is a game called ‘Resemble’. In this game, the candidate will need to mentally rotate the image on the left, according to the instruction below the image, and then reproduce the image on the right-hand side. This game examines a candidate’s spatial reasoning skills.

Game 4: IBM Cognitive Ability Assessment – “Numbubbles”

The fourth of the IBM Cognitive Ability Assessments is called ‘Numbubbles’. Candidates are presented with a target number and then need to identify and pop the correct bubbles with the equation that would equal the target number presented.

“Numbubbles” game examines candidates’ quantitative reasoning skills. Make sure you are comfortable to conduct simple arithmetic calculations in your head without making mistakes and making sure you can work through cases quickly.

You will not be presented with calculations that are any harder than simple additions, subtractions, multiplications of digits under 10, etc.

Bear in mind, you will only be given 9 seconds per each target and will need to pop as many correct bubbles as you can for each of the targets. The difficulty level will increase as you solve the puzzles.

Game 5: IBM Cognitive Ability Assessment – “Tally Up”

The fifth and final part of the IBM Cognitive Ability Assessments is called “Tally Up”, and is a game in which candidates need to quickly identify which of  the two groups of tokens presented on the screen has higher/lower/equal value to the other.

On the bottom of the screen you will find the equals/less or more than signs that you need to press once you correctly identified the relationship between the two groups of tokens.

To succeed in this game you will once again have to perform very simple arithmetic calculations in your head, and above all, work through the problems with precision, identifying the correct responses as quickly as you possibly can.

You will have only 4 seconds per each screen and the only calculation numbers used are a 4, 2, and 1. The number of tokens on each side will increase as you solve more puzzles.

3. IBM IPAT Test

Another part of IBM Cognitive Assessments are iPAT tests.

Every candidate applying to IBM is required to take the IBM Cognitive Assessment Test, referred to as the IPAT Test, which is unique to IBM; meaning that questions asked will probably be very different to what you have experienced when applying to other companies.

What is an IBM iPAT test?

IBM iPAT test purpose is to measure how quickly candidates can analyze information and reason logically, under time pressure.

With the IBM IPAT Test, you will have seven days to complete two out of three sections.

The IBM IPAT Test consists of:

  • IBM Numerical series: you will be presented with a sequence of numbers or symbols and will have to identify patterns to choose the next item in the sequence
  • IBM Numerical reasoning test; this is made up of 20 questions and will present you with a longer problem, that will require a number of steps to arrive at the right answer

Why is the iPAT test difficult to pass?

This test examines a candidate’s ability to accurately extract relevant information from a previously unseen passage of text; it involves critically analysing statements and deciding which of them are true, false – or whether this is impossible to say based on the information contained in the passage of text.

c. Morgan Stanley’s Checking Test

In this test you will be presented with an array of numbers and you will be asked to compare the given numbers to another sheet of numbers very similar to yours. You will then need to make 32 comparisons within 2 minutes of time allowance.

This test will examine your ability to work under pressure. Although the task is pretty straightforward, it requires high levels of concentration to spot what are often small differences between different sources of data.

Tip: Make sure you are in the right mindset before taking this test. Remember that the only obstacles in this test are your stress and the time limit. What you need to do is calm down, and then work quickly through the examples.

d. Morgan Stanley’s Logical Reasoning Test

3. Telephone Interview

If you have successfully passed the online tests stage, you will be invited to a telephone interview which will last approximately 45 minutes.

This interview will be competency based (CBI)and questions will be focused around your CV and personal motivations. Depending on your position and line of business, in this final stage of the Morgan Stanley’s assessment process, you might be asked to complete these two assessments.

A. Group exercise

This exercise will examine your ability to work as part of a team. Throughout this task, various employees will observe you and how you solve problems when working with others under time pressure.

It is important that you are confident enough to share and argument your ideas, but also be ready to contribute to somebody else’s input. Most importantly: speak clearly and never interrupt anyone!

Tip: Try to persuade others towards your ideas and also ask critical though-provoking questions, but only do so when it feels natural. You need to appreciate that other people are just as important on the team.

B. Presentation

In this exercise you will be provided with a candidate brief which will tell you what is required of you, including any relevant extra information you might need to use. You will then be given strict time limit to review the information and prepare a presentation.

Tips:

  • Watch the time when you present – it is your responsibility to not overrun your allowance. Do not finish too early either – it might mean that you had very little to say.
  • Ensure good body language and maintain relaxed eye contact. Speak clearly and vary your style, speed and tone. Try to stand still and remember that smiling always helps too.
  • Make sure to pick up any key facts from the information provided and be confident to speak about it if you are asked questions.
  • Involve your assessor. At the end of a sub-topic or flipchart you can ask your assessor if they have any questions. You can also start by asking if they would like to see anything specific in your presentation, other than what is outlined in your agenda.

5. Final Interview

3. EY Job Simulation

In EY Job Simulation stage you will be examined for your work style and situation-specific reactions and competencies. This test will use real work-based scenarios to test if your individual strengths reflect what EY are looking for in their candidates.

EY Job Simulation Test:

  1. Has 14 questions, including multiple choice, ranking, written and pre-recorded video Q&A
  2. Some of the questions in there will be timed.
  3. Has to be completed in one sitting and usually takes around 60 minutes for most candidates.

In EY Job Simulation stage you will be required to record some answers in the form of a video recording. Make sure you are sat in the quiet place and that your attire and background is appropriate and professional.

How can I prepare for the EY Job Simulation?

EY Job Simulation is very similar to the two very common online assessments: Situational Judgement Test and Work Personality Questionnaire.

Although your EY Job Simulation will be targeted for the specific industry and role you applied to, you can benefit from practicing general Situational Judgement questions to practice analysing various job scenarios and predicting your reactions.

4. EY (Virtual) Assessment Centre (a.k.a. EY Experience Day)

The next step is the EY Assessment Center a.k.a. EY Experience Day.

EY Experience Days will take place virtually until further notice.

On the day of your virtual EY Experience you’ll take part in a number of activities. During the exercises, you’ll be required to use a webcam facility in order to interact with your assessor.

The EY Assessment Centre is designed to see if you have the strengths needed for your role at EY but it’s also a chance to see if EY is right for you.

EY Experience Day / Assessment Centre Preparation Tips:

  1. Have a good night sleep before
  2. Dress appropriately; choose a neutral and clean background for your camera. You want to avoid any distractions for your recruiter and present yourself in a professional manner
  3. Secure: a webcam, wifi with a strong and stable internet connection (you will be live streaming)
  4. Stay in a place where you can be uninterrupted for a long time; let your friends and family know that!

What exercises do I have to complete at EY Experience Day?

The assessment centre at Ernst & Young is usually divided into two parts:

  1. EY Group Exercise
    • You will be required to take part in the group in-tray exercise, which will expose you to a task that does not require any prior preparations.
    • You will need to analyse a piece of information and use your reasoning to suggest the best solution.

EY group exercise tip: remember to stay calm and focused; the HR assessors will observe your behavior throughout the assessment centre.

  1. EY Case Study
  • Analysis and recommendations for a business decision

You will be given details of a company and relevant materials relating to the decision they are considering.

In just under 40 minutes, you need to fully comprehend the specific business situation that the company is facing, analyse relevant information, and prepare recommendations in the form of a written document or presentation. You will be able to use Microsoft Word to write up your findings.

  • Team and project plan set-up

You will also be asked to prepare a plan to manage the team, which will include: the work schedule, individual tasks, contingency plans and progress checks.

EY Case Study Tip: You need to work through the examples quickly and be confident about your decisions. You will have no time to go back and start from scratch, so just stick with what you are doing and try to be very precise when forming your arguments.

5. EY Final Interview

When you get to the EY Final Job Interview stage, you will have an interview with a senior member of the Ernst & Young.

Do not mess up here. Not many get there. Prep is key.

This is an opportunity for you to show your interest and the potential skills that make you suitable for the particular role that you applied to.

This EY final interview is a mixture of motivational questions and competency based questions (CBI).

The EY final interview is focused around your CV and personal motivations.

This is how you should prep for the EY final job interview:

  1. Review of your CV. This is a must. You may be asked the details.
  2. Prepare examples of situations where you demonstrated the core competencies sought after by EY. These are:
  • People who excel
  • People who are good at working in teams
  • People with integrity
  • People who demonstrate respect
  • People with energy, enthusiasm and the courage to lead

Use your school, uni, sports life, etc. Prepare examples in STAR format. Take notes of key points. Practise answers either using a video interview platform (e.g. GF’s) or in front of a mirror. Our video interview platform includes questions for roles in consultancy that you may practise.

It is very likely this interview will take form of a video or telephone interview.

Be prepared to talk about your reasons to apply to EY over other competitors, as well as your personal motivations and the necessary skills and education for the particular job you apply to.

EY video interview tip: Find a quiet space where you will not be disturbed. Leave a note in sight to be reminded you about the acronym STAR – Situation, Task, Action and Result. Every time you answer the question, make sure to talk precisely about each of these points. Make sure there is a logical flow between situations you describe under S, T, A, R.

Think about the projects you have previously worked on – whether they are from your professional experiences, education, passions, sports or personal experiences.
